Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon pointed out on Wednesday “unbelievable responsibility” socialists if the left tabled a motion of censure against the government, calling on them to “break away from their bonds” with the party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

An “unbelievable responsibility”

“If the National Rally considers that it has a convergence of struggles with the New Popular Front, and vice versa, the motion of censure will be adopted”commented government spokesperson Maud Bregeon in her press report from the Council of Ministers. “The key to voting on a possible motion of censure also belongs to the socialist deputies who have an incredible responsibility to raise their heads and break away from their links with La insoumise. Many left-wing French people expect responsibility from the deputies they elected”she pointed.

A fragile coalition

Formed on September 21 at the end of several weeks of political crisis following the unexpected dissolution of the National Assembly by President Emmanuel Macron in June, the government is particularly fragile. So the left and the far right could bring him down together.

France is heavily in debt and the government wants to vote on many highly criticized economies. The governing coalition is also divided on tax increases.

A motion of censure could be tabled as early as next week in the event of recourse to article 49.3 of the Constitution – which allows it to pass a text without a vote – on the Social Security budget.
