The PS section of Molenbeek and municipal councilor Yassine Akki announced their joint decision to withdraw his candidacy for the post of alderman during the installation of the municipal college on Sunday.
According to them, this decision stems from information, published in the press, according to which Yassine Akki was judicially convicted for acts committed when he was 19 years old. “These facts date back around thirty years and since then, Yassine Akki, now 48 years old, has fully reintegrated into society. He started a family, is married and the father of six children, and is involved in political action in favor of the most vulnerable populations of Molenbeek. This commitment was widely welcomed during the municipal elections in October, where it received massive support.defend the person concerned and his party.
The daily La Derniere Heure indicated on Wednesday that the municipal councilor had been sentenced by the courts twice more than twenty years ago: in March 2001, to 4 years in prison, 2 of which were suspended, for rape of a minor over the age of 16 years of age at the time of the facts; and in 1998, 10 months suspended, for theft, using break-in, climbing or false keys.
In a joint statement, Mr. Akki said he would remain “deeply convinced of the progressive project of the new majority to improve the lives of residents”, but chooses to take a step aside so as not to harm the establishment of the majority, “in the sole interest of Molenbeekois and my voters”. The elected socialist also displayed his “determination“to continue his “fights for more social justice”.
Thanking Yassine Akki for “this decision guided by a sense of responsibility“, the PS indicated that the party authorities would meet quickly to appoint a socialist alderman to complete the municipal college team.
