Inter Miami has found a new head coach for Lionel Messi and Co. and is once again relying on a past with FC Barcelona. Javier Mascherano signed a contract on Tuesday until the end of the 2027 season and will leave the Argentine association at the turn of the year, where he has worked in various roles since January 2021. Among other things, he looked after the Olympic team this summer.
“Javier has gained unrivaled experience in his career, from playing on the world’s biggest stages to coaching at international youth level. “He has the mix of skills and experience we were looking for and even has direct coaching experience with Tomás Avilés, Facundo Farías, Federico Redondo and Benjamin Cremaschi,” said Inter owner Jorge Mas.
Miami failed in the playoffs against Atlanta United. In the main round, the club set a league record with 74 points. Coach Gerardo Martino announced his resignation on Friday for personal reasons.
Mascherano ended his professional career four years ago with Estudiantes de La Plata. However, he played the most games (334) for FC Barcelona, where he also played together with Messi. He didn't appear on the pitch more often with anyone else; including the national team, there were 414 games. After the 2018 World Cup in Russia with an exit in the round of 16 and 147 international matches, the former defensive midfielder announced his retirement.
