A committed activist
He joined the Young Communists in 1946, before climbing the ranks of the PCF: central party school in 1964, Moscow cadre school in 1967, then member of the Central Committee and the Political Bureau. In 1982, he joined the party secretariat, headed by Georges Marchais.
A political career marked by a presidential candidacy
Member of Parliament for Allier from 1978 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2002, he tirelessly defended agricultural and workers' interests. Candidate for the 1988 presidential election, he received 6.76% of the vote against François Mitterrand, ensuring reimbursement of campaign expenses for his party.
