Basescu: “Georgescu knows the book/ He will have an opponent in me, it is not a solution for Romania”

Former president Traian Băsescu stated, in an intervention on Digi24, that he will be an opponent for Călin Georgescu because his faith “has nothing in common” with the developments of European society, which makes him unacceptable for the European Union, reports G4Media.

“I have met Călin Georgescu before. He will not have a supporter in me, Romania is a European country and does not need identity doubts. The population does not need people who consult with Putin and who believe that the legionary values can be preached even today”, said Traian Băsescu.

He said that Georgescu is unacceptable by today's standards, but also by those of the interwar period, when the legionary ideology was considered unacceptable.

“Georgescu knows how to read, but the faith he has has nothing in common with the developments of European society: family, religion, church. Georgescu is far beyond what can be accepted now in the EU, but also in the interwar period. Legionnaires were not accepted. His faith has nothing to do with modern faith. He will have an opponent in me. Călin Georgescu is not a solution for Romania”, said the former president of Romania.

He admitted that his name was a variant for the post of prime minister in 2010, but he did not accept it precisely because he knew Călin Georgescu's beliefs.

“Ms. Lasconi must get her hands on the book”

As for Georgescu's opponent in the second round, Elena Lasconi, the former head of state urged her to “get her hands on the book” and get ready with foreign policy topics.

“Ms. Lasconi has another problem. He must get his hands on the book. Until December 21, he must read about the Middle East, the Black Sea, the NATO Treaty or the Treaty of Lisbon”, Traian Băsescu appreciated.

He stated that he received calls from European officials after it became clear that Georgescu would reach the second round of the presidential elections.

“I don't want to tell you how many phone calls I received today from the European Commission and the European Parliament for clarifications. The cause of what is happening now is deep corruption. Romania has returned to a prime minister who manages the country's budget as if it were his own money. Those in Brussels couldn't believe that something like this was possible,” Băsescu said.

Regarding the resignations of Marcel Ciolacu and Nicolae Ciucă from the heads of the parties they have led so far, Traian Băsescu believes that it is a normal gesture after such a failure.

“The only incorrect thing is what Ciolacu does. He should also submit his mandate as prime minister to Iohannis, because otherwise he maintains this alliance that has done a lot of harm to the Romanians”, commented Traian Băsescu.
