The Kremlin reacted cautiously to the results of the presidential elections in Romania, according to statements cited by Reuters. On Sunday night, the public press agency Ria Novosti categorized Călin Georgescu as “a candidate aligned with Russia”.
Vladimir Putin’s presidential administration declared on Monday that it “does not know Calin Georgescu’s worldview very well.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that while Moscow did not know much about Georgescu’s views on international affairs, he clearly understood the position of Romania’s current leadership, which he said was hostile to Russia.
On Sunday night, the Kremlin press agency Ria Novosti wrote about Georgescu that he is a politician “aligned with Russia. ”
“Georgescu’s success threatens Romania’s pro-Ukraine position”
Georgescu’s success in the first round of the presidential election was unexpected and threatens Romania’s firm pro-Ukraine position, writes Reuters.
Reuters also noted several anti-Western or pro-Russia positions taken by Georgescu in recent years.
In an interview in 2021, he called NATO’s anti-missile shield in Deveselu a “disgrace of diplomacy” and said the Alliance would not protect any of its members if they were attacked by Russia.
In a separate interview, he stated that Romania was not ready to handle anything diplomatically and strategically, and that its best chance was “Russian wisdom”.
The Financial Times also recalled that in 2020, Georgescu called Putin one of the world’s few “real leaders” and said the Russian president “loves his country”.
