While the park says it is saddened by this incident, it recalls that clashes between bears are “natural” behaviors that can be observed in the wild.

A bear from the Belgian zoo Pairi Daiza died this Sunday, November 24 after fighting with a fellow bear in its enclosure, the park lamented on its social networks. The zoo explains that a “conflict broke out” between the two black bears.

In accordance with park protocols, crews responded quickly by firing blank rounds to separate the two bears. The park also specifies that “these detonations have no physical impact, their objective being solely to distract the attention of the animals”.

“Natural” behavior

However, the intervention did not have the expected effect on the animals. “Despite these efforts, the two bears continued their confrontation,” and one of the two bears did not survive his injuries.

The park would like to point out that this type of behavior is “natural” in bears, and that it can be observed “sometimes in the wild”.

The zoo nevertheless states that it is “deeply saddened” by this incident. “Our passionate teams, and first and foremost the keepers, do everything to provide a living environment adapted to each of the animals,” concludes the park.
