The mayor of Périgueux, Delphine Labail, was in Alsace to participate in commemorations of the Liberation of Strasbourg this Saturday, November 23. The city was one of the last to be delivered from Nazi soldiers by General Leclerc's division on November 23, 1944.
Delphine Labail arrived in Strasbourg from Friday November 22, at the invitation of mother, Jeanne Barseghian. “It was important to be alongside our colleagues from the city of Strasbourg since, when we celebrated the Liberation of Périgueux on August 19, Mayor Jeanne and her team came alongside us”explains the elected representative from Périgord at the end of the national commemoration chaired by Emmanuel Macron.
“Two sister cities, with two intertwined histories”
“We have a long history that connects us, we are two sister cities, with two intertwined histories”adds Delphine Labail, in reference to the reception by the city of Périgueux in 1939 of 80,000 Strasbourg residents driven into exile by German troops. “It is therefore logical, after having welcomed them, to come and celebrate the liberation alongside them right here in Strasbourg”adds the mayor of Périgueux.
Delphine Labails notably participated in a dinner during which she presented Jeanne Barseghian with a painting created especially for the occasionin order to celebrate the friendship between the two cities. Members of the Périgueux youth council also took part in the ceremonies. They read, with teenagers from Strasbourg and Stuttgart, a text to pay tribute to the liberators and resistance fighters in front of the war memorial this Saturday morning.
