Paris La Défense Arena
November 23, 2024
Today, November 23, 2024, get ready to experience an electric evening at Paris La Défense Arena. Sum 41the rebel princes of punk-rock, are arriving in the French capital for the very last time as part of their farewell tour. If the tension rises a notch, it is because such an event will never happen again: after 27 years of incendiary riffs and of choruses screamed at the top of their lungsthe group bows out. But there is no question of doing it discreetly… Before flying to Australia, Sum 41 intend to set Paris ablaze with this concert unique at La Défense.
It’s difficult to talk about Sum 41 without mentioning their image: that of dirty kids inveterate, with their disheveled blond hair, their faded T-shirts, and this nonchalant attitude which perfectly embodied the adolescent fury of the 2000s. Behind this apparent casualness hides a raw talent, an overflowing stage energy and a dazzling ability to compose generational anthems.
Formed in 1996 in the province of Ontario, Sum 41 is Canada's answer to tidal wave Californian punk-rock led by groups like Blink-182 or Green Day. But where their contemporaries often play the sunny pop-punk card, Sum 41 injects their music with a dose of darkness and irresistible rage. Their DNA? Sharp riffs mixed with bursts of metal, catchy pop melodies, and sometimes even echoes of more introspective alternative rock. In perfectly controlled chaos, the drums hammer at full speed, the guitars roar with unbridled intensity, and Deryck Whibley's scratchy voice oscillates between melancholy, dark humor et raw anger.
With generational hits like In Too Deep, Fat Lip or even Still Waitingthe bunch of eternal teenagers captured this precise moment when we skipped class and had fun defying the rules, even if it meant scraping our knees a little along the way. But their discography is not limited to teenage anthems. More recent albums like 13 Voices, Order in Decline or Heaven :x: Hell show a more mature and dark side of the group, but still with that rage intact.
This evening, by taking the stage of Paris La Défense Arena, Sum 41 will prove one last time that adulthood failed to tame his rebellious soul. A page is turning, but one thing is certain: their flame will continue to burn in the broken hearts of fans who, too, refuse to grow up.
Did you know?
But actually, where does the name Sum 41 come from? The group was formed on July 31, 1996 in Ajax, Ontario, on 41e summer day.
