ITHACA, N.Y. — A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Tompkins County starting at 4 p.m. Thursday and stretching until 4 p.m. Friday ahead of a forecasted snowstorm expected to hit central New York and parts of Pennsylvania.
A Winter Storm Watch was issued Wednesday, but it has been upgraded by the National Weather Service. The forecast calls for 1-4 inches of snow in lower elevations and 6-12 inches in higher elevations, with the possibility of higher snow totals.
It appears Tompkins County is poised to miss the worst impacts of the storm, as the current local forecast only calls for 1-3 inches of wet snow Thursday night into Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service’s warning, “Travel could be very difficult, especially with snowfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour in spots overnight. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning commute.”
It also notes that because of the weight of the snow, trees and powerlines could be impacted by the storm. People can get updates on road conditions by calling 5-1-1 in New York.
