Lhe schedule of flights departing from Charleroi airport is disrupted this Thursday morning due to winter conditions, Nathalie Pierard, spokesperson for the Walloon airport, told Belga. In total, over the entire morning, around forty flights were affected.
“The inspection carried out this morning, when the runway opened, showed that the track was not safe enough despite the preventive measures put in place,” explains the spokesperson. The track could therefore only be opened at 7:30 a.m. instead of 6:30 a.m. as usual. Around fifteen flights were planned during this morning rush hour.
“In addition, we also have to de-ice the planes, which takes time,” adds Ms. Pierard.
No flights were canceled but this created cascading delays. “These delays should be resolved by the end of this morning. In total, around forty flights are affected,” according to a rough estimate from the spokesperson.
At Zaventem airport, most flights left on Thursday morning with delays due to winter weather. Delays reach more than three hours, according to the Brussels Airport website.
Planes need to be de-iced after the first winter bite of fall, said spokesman Jeffrey Franssens. Possible delays from other airports where it snowed also have an impact. A flight to the Finnish capital, Helsinki, was canceled. Travelers can check the possible delay of their flight on the airport website.
The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) had issued a yellow warning for slippery conditions overnight from Wednesday to Thursday for all provinces of the country, with the exception of West Flanders. In Hainaut, the alert was in effect until 8:00 a.m. Thursday.
