Temperatures will be particularly low in the northern half of the country this Thursday, November 21, announced Météo-France. The arrival of the Caetano storm is accompanied by snowfall and strong winds.
A France cut in two. The cold will set in this Thursday, November 21 over a large part of the country with the passage of storm Caetano, warns Météo-France. The agency places 33 departments on orange alert for the risk of snow and ice to the north of the depression's path, and 19 at the same alert level for violent winds to the south.
With very different temperatures depending on the region: the minimums will range from -2 to +1°C in the northeast quarter as far as Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, from 0 to 3°C in the northwest, from 5 at 10°C in the South-West and the Mediterranean rim.
Values which will determine whether or not snowflakes remain on the road. From the start of the morning in northern Brittany, Lower Normandy and the north of the Pays de Loire, snowfall occurs all the way to the plains and ends up whitening the soil.
In the morning, these snowfalls extend to Upper Normandy, the Paris region, Center-Val-de-Loire, and Burgundy. It will only be 1°C in Cherbourg, 2°C in Rouen and Auxerre and 3°C in Paris.
Up to 20 cm of snow in Franche-Comté
In the afternoon, it will snow from Normandy to the north of Burgundy Franche-Comté and the south of the Grand-Est, then in the evening snowfall will be limited to the north of Burgundy Franche-Comté to the south of the 'Alsace.
“The layer of snow on the ground can reach 2 to 5 cm, locally 7 to 10 cm, except towards Franche-Comté where it can reach 10 to 20 cm,” writes Météo-France.
Temperatures will be particularly contrasting during the day. “Barely above 0°C in the north, especially under the snow, they will often exceed 15°C on a southern fringe, from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean,” summarizes Météo-France.
In the afternoon, it will therefore be 0°C in Belfort and Chaumont, 2°C in Paris and Amiens, 1°C in Alençon or even 3°C in Lille, but 16°C in Marseille, 17°C in Perpignan and Biarritz. Locally in the South-West, the mercury could even rise to 18°C. Even coming close to the 20°C mark in the Basque Country.
In the evening, temperatures in the northern half will remain close to 0°C, which may justify maintaining snow and ice vigilance, even if the snowfall has ended. Météo-France announces -1°C, 0°C in Metz and 2°C in the capital. The coldest temperatures should be recorded overnight from Thursday to Friday, with -4°C forecast in Chaumont, in the Grand Est.
