Substitute councilor for the PT in Florianópolis (SC) from 2025

We watched happily and thrilled with Vinícius Júnior’s goals and decisive plays throughout the year. We are also concerned and debated about the various attacks and the reactions that the athlete had in the face of countless forms of violence. But after all, what can cause so much anger? The man is talented, he delivers the entertainment expected from sport; what is missing from it? Well, I answer: there is a lack of silence!

Vini was too noisy, dragging too much furniture in search of a new space configuration. Vini Jr. was not made to remain silent, ponder or just let it go as much is expected of those who seem to be like him. Poking where it hurts, bleeds, bothers and generates reactions. And it was part of this reaction that we watched in disbelief: the Ballon d’Or ended up in hands other than those who won everything they could, who were in the imagination and in the choices of the majority who minimally followed world football in 2024. Racism prevails and even today it wants to make captive the steps and behaviors of those who are considered inferior.

This fight against oppression is not just an individual battle; it is a reflection of a society that still struggles to recognize equality in all its forms. Vini Jr.’s talent goes beyond the four lines of the field; he represents hope for many young athletes who dream of being seen not just for the color of their skin, but for their potential and dedication. Every dribble, every goal scored, and every act of resistance turns into a cry for justice and recognition, resonating in a world where diversity must be celebrated.

Furthermore, pressure on black athletes is exacerbated by a history of discrimination rooted in sport. The expectation that they be “grateful” or “silent” in the face of adversity is too heavy a burden to bear. When Vini Jr. expresses his outrage or defends his rights, he is not just speaking for himself; he is giving a voice to many others facing similar situations. Its visibility brings to light necessary discussions about racism in football and society as a whole, challenging prejudiced narratives.

Finally, it is essential that we all come together to support personalities like Vini Jr., recognizing their struggle and celebrating their courage. We need to promote an environment where everyone can express themselves freely, without fear of reprisal or judgement. May we learn from this history and work together for a future where talent is recognized regardless of skin color, where silence is not seen as a virtue, but rather as a conscious choice of those who have a voice to transform realities.
