Met Éireann has upgraded the existing yellow snow-ice warning to status orange and says that “significant snowfall accumulations [are] expected” in Waterford tonight with some flooding possible.
The status orange warning has been added to an existing status yellow low temperatures warning issued on Monday, November 18, by the national forecaster. An orange snow and rain warning is also in place in Waterford and Cork with flooding possible in the area.
Met Éireann are predicting that very difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility on the roads will be caused by significant snowfall expected to land tonight. This may cause travel disruption, delays to public transport likely and difficult conditions underfoot. The broadcaster has forecast that animal welfare issues could be caused by the conditions.
Met Éireann Meteorologist Rebecca Cantwell warned earlier this week that “northerly airflow will also bring scattered showers of rain, sleet and snow through the week and with those cold temperatures, that precipitation will tend to freeze, increasing icy conditions.”
She warned people to “take care when out and about” in light of the weather conditions.
Temperatures in the south of the country are predicted to be very cold with lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees in light to moderate easterly or variable winds. Widespread frost and ice will develop.
