Dirty Hesse: After a stormy and partly rainy Tuesday, things are turning wintry: The temperatures are dropping significantly and there can be snow down to low altitudes.

The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of gusts of up to 75 km/h for all districts and independent cities in Hesse until Tuesday evening. In areas close to showers and in exposed locations, gusts of up to 85 km/h must be expected.

In addition, there are warnings for continuous rain in some districts with precipitation amounts of around 30 liters per square meter. According to the DWD, quantities of up to 50 liters can be reached in storage situations.

Heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms

“It will rain heavily in the afternoon and individual thunderstorms are also possible,” said hr meteorologist Michael Köckritz on Tuesday morning. The wind or storm will increase a little as the day progresses. Heavy gusts of up to 95 km/h are possible on the highest mountains.

He said that the wind situation was more turbulent than in previous weeks of high pressure. “But most of the leaves from the trees have fallen off, which means the area exposed to the wind has been significantly reduced.” But a few branches could break, he added.

Temperature-wise, Tuesday will be mild at 6 to 11 degrees. But cold air comes to Hesse in the course of the afternoon. “In the Upland the snowfall line then drops again to 400 to 500 meters,” said Köckritz. The first snow of the season fell on Sunday, including on the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön and Taunus.

Snow in the lowlands doesn’t stay

The wind will die down quickly and significantly on Wednesday night, Köckritz said. The rain continues southeast, with more showers following in partly cloudy conditions.

As the snow line continues to fall, these usually turn into snow down to low altitudes, as the hr weather expert said. But the snow won’t stay there. “However, five centimeters of new snow is expected on the mountains, and perhaps there will be a little more in places.”

According to Köckritz, the temperatures are dropping to 3 degrees in the Rheingau and 0 degrees in the Kassel area. “In the higher altitudes it will be frosty with down to -2 degrees, so be careful: it can get slippery there.” He added that it becomes wintry on the roads above a height of around 500 meters. According to Köckritz, in the lowlands it will be “at most slippery due to blown leaves”.

Coldest days Thursday and Friday

From tomorrow, Wednesday, it will also be colder during the day. The maximum values then only reach 0 to 6 degrees. In the following days the cold weather will remain for the time being. “On the nights of Thursday and Friday the streets can turn white,” said Köckritz.

Partly sun, partly cloudy and a few snow or sleet showers in the morning are forecast for Thursday, especially in the north and east, then with a maximum of 5 degrees. On Friday there will be more clouds than sun and a few snow, sleet and sleet showers at only up to 4 degrees.
