Nigerian Football fans have vented their frustrations regarding Victor Boniface’s lacklustre performance during the Super Eagles’ unexpected 2-1 defeat against Rwanda in their concluding Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Uyo on Monday, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
While Nigeria had already secured a spot in the AFCON 2025, supporters couldn’t hide their disappointment as the Bayern Leverkusen striker failed to make a significant impact, watching as the Eagles squandered a one-goal lead against the resilient East African side.
Samuel Chukwueze had given Nigeria an early advantage in the 59th minute, but two quickfire goals from Aimable Mutinzi and Imanishimwe Nshuti in the 72nd and 75th minutes respectively turned the tide, clinching a memorable victory for Rwanda.
Fans took to X to voice their concerns about Boniface’s contributions to the national team, despite his stellar form at the club level. One user, @SpiceyMall57010, succinctly remarked, “Boniface is a very funny guy and all, but it’s time we start telling him the truth… some players are just club champions at best and nothing more.”

Ogbuevi echoed this sentiment, stating, “It’s high time we had a genuine conversation about Victor Boniface. He hasn’t delivered a single good performance for the Super Eagles. Not even one. I’m not even talking about goals or assists, just a standard performance would be nice.”
Ayo Jose couldn’t help but take a dig at the forward’s social media antics, quipping, “Boniface’s mouth runs faster and stronger than his legs on the pitch.” Another fan, Daniel Karpella, alluded to Boniface’s recent snub from CAF’s shortlist for the Africa’s Best Player award, saying, “There’s a reason CAF didn’t nominate Victor Boniface for the Africa’s Best Player award, despite his Bundesliga victories, German Cup title, and Europa League final appearance. He remains poor and unserious in the Nigerian jersey.”

Daniele Suleiman pointed out the striking contrast between Boniface’s active social media presence and his on-field contributions, saying, “If it’s about cracking jokes on Twitter, Boniface is all in. But on the pitch for Nigeria? Absolutely no contribution whatsoever.”
User @MilaVIbezCFC went as far as suggesting that both Boniface and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye should be left out of future selections, stating, “Boniface and Maduka Okoye should never don the Super Eagles jersey again.”
Chinaza further commented on the evident disparity between Boniface’s performances for his club and national team, adding, “The Victor Boniface we see playing for Nigeria is a far cry from the one we see at Bayern Leverkusen.” Olisa Osega voiced similar concerns, remarking, “I watch a lot of Bayer Leverkusen games and I know the real Victor Boniface. What happens whenever he wears that Nigerian shirt? It’s like he becomes a mere shadow of himself.”
