A big fish in the Var waters. At the beginning of November, a great white shark “3.5 to 4.5 meters” long was observed by members of the Apecs association off the coast of the department, the observatory said on Facebook. Elasmed on Thursday November 14, and revealed by Nice-Matin.
“The conclusions are simple, it is a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). Great news for this species classified as 'critically endangered' and having almost disappeared from our French coasts, and even from the Mediterranean due to very disparate levels of protection depending on the country”, writes the association.
If since then, the shark has not been seen, according to the Emergence association, this is a “remarkable observation” while the white shark population is said to be “in sharp decline” over the last 30 years.
“From 1989 to 1998, 85 observations were recorded, and only 46 between 1999 to 2008, or -45%,” writes the NGO promoting awareness of marine species.
In September, other carnivores, “Blue Skin” sharks, were observed off the coast of Sanary-sur-Mer devouring the carcass of a sperm whale.
