The conversion bonus will be eliminated in 2025. And the overall budget devoted to greening the vehicle fleet will decrease. Dealers expect lower sales.
Today, scrapping your old polluting car and replacing it with a clean vehicle entitles you in certain cases to a conversion bonus. But in 2025 it's over. To save money, the government is disconnecting this popular device. Between 2018 and 2022, more than a million bonuses ranging from 1,500 to 5,000 euros were distributed. Dealers fear that the end of this aid will slow down sales of electric and hybrid cars. “Obviously, it sends messages that risk being very negatively perceived by consumers who may simply have to wait,” said a dealership manager. “So it is possible that there will be a fairly significant drop in sales,” he adds.
Beyond the scrappage bonus, the entire envelope devoted to greening vehicles is being cut. 1.5 billion euros in 2024 compared to only 1 billion in 2025. The ecological bonus and social leasing are maintained, but their amount could decrease for certain specialists. This decision is contradictory with the necessary ecological transition.
