Arctic air grips the UK, prompting snow and ice warnings

The Met Office has issued multiple snow and ice warnings for the coming days as cold Arctic air is forecast to sweep across the UK. Here’s what to expect in our latest forecast.

Sunday morning will begin with bright conditions in northern and eastern parts of the UK. However, scattered showers will affect the northwest and northeast of Scotlandturning wintry over higher ground. In contrast, southern and western regions will be cloudier with patchy rain moving across Northern Ireland, northern England and parts of Wales.

Sunday afternoon: Snow for some

By Sunday afternoonclouds and outbreaks of rain will continue to move southeastwardimpacting central and southern parts of England and Wales. Northern areas will stay mostly sunnythough showers will persist in the far north and northeastturning increasingly to snow at low levels later in the day. Winds will strengthenparticularly in the northeast and along southern and southwestern coasts.

It will feel cold in the northwhile temperatures in the south will remain closer to average. Highs will range from 6°C in Glasgow and Newcastle, 7°C in Manchester, 9°C in Belfast and Norwich, 10°C in London, 11°C in Swansea and Bristol, and 12°C in Plymouth.

Sunday night: Chilly and frosty

Clear skies across northern regions will lead to a widespread frost and icy patches through Sunday night. Blustery wintry showers will continue in the far north. Central and southern areashowever, will stay mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle and hill fog forming by dawn.

Monday: Further snow likely

Monday will bring continued sleet, snow and hail showers to northern Scotlandwith snow accumulating over higher ground and settling at lower levels in the morning and evening. The rest of the north and east will remain largely dry with sunny spellsthough cloud will increase through the day. In the south and west, rain (locally heavy) will spread northeastwardturning to snow over northern hills and possibly at lower levels later. Areas most at risk of snow include northern England, northern Wales and the Midlandsespecially through Monday night and into Tuesday.

The rest of the week: Cold with snow risk

Tuesday will start cloudy for many, with rain across southern regions and a mix of sleet and snow affecting central areasincluding northern England, north Wales and the north Midlands. Snowfall may be heavy over higher groundleading to significant accumulations. Rain and snow will clear eastwardfollowed by colder, brighter conditions spreading south. Northern areas will remain coldwith wintry showers moving inland on brisk northerly winds. Strong winds may bring gales or even severe gales to the eastern coast of England.

Wintry showers will continue on Wednesdayincluding sleet, snow, and hail, moving inland from coasts exposed to northwesterly winds. These brisk winds will create a noticeable wind chill. Elsewhereit will remain mostly dry with spells of sunshine. A cold day overallwith widespread frost expected overnight.

Thursday’s conditions will likely resemble Wednesday, with a low chance of cloudier weather reaching the far southpotentially bringing outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow.

The cold or very cold conditions continue everywhere on Friday. Wintry showers will persist in areas exposed to north-northwesterly winds, while other regions will enjoy plenty of sunshine. Northern and eastern areas will remain windythough winds may ease in the southwestwhere increasing cloud cover could bring rain or hill snow later.
