Jon Jones, who makes his return to the MMA octagon this Saturday at UFC 309 against Stipe Miocic, has different tattoos with very specific meanings.
“Bones” is back. The one who is considered the best MMA fighter in history (27 wins, 1 loss, 1 no-contest) faces Stipe Miocic this Saturday in New York in the main event of UFC 309. He will defend his weight championship belt heavy.
In addition to being an outstanding fighter, Jon Jones is a big fan of body art and tattoos. He has two tattoos on his body. Here are their meanings.
Tatouage «Phillipians»
On the right side of his chest, the 37-year-old American has a “Philippians 4:13” tattoo. It refers to line 13 of the 4th verse of Philippians in the Bible. He said, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” It was his sister Carmen's favorite Bible verse. He did this in her memory after she died in 2000 from brain cancer.
“Gaidojutsu” tattoo
On his left ribcage are two Japanese kanji symbols inked vertically on top of each other. The two symbols are “㝊”, which means “to guide”, and “術”, which means art or skill, and which is also the “su” of jiu-jitsu. Put together, they have no meaning, but the characters resemble the word Gaidojutsu, which happens to be a martial art created by Greg Jackson and practiced by Jon Jones.
