ATP Finals. Italian Jannik Sinner qualified for the semi-finals… without playing

World No.1 Jannik Sinner is guaranteed to participate in the semi-finals of the ATP Masters even before his third group match against Russian Daniil Medvedev on Thursday evening, thanks to the set won by Australian Alex De Minaur against American Taylor Fritz.

By winning the first round 7-5 against Fritz (5th in the world), a match still in progress, De Minaur (7th) offered Sinner his ticket to the last four.

Medvedev must win

The Italian, who won his first two matches of the 2024 ATP Masters, against De Minaur and Fritz, will qualify even if he loses to Medvedev (4th) who must beat him to hope to continue his journey.

Sinner, unfortunate finalist of the 2023 edition of the ATP Masters and winner of seven tournaments this year including the Australian Open and the US Open, has never won an ATP circuit tournament in front of the Italian public.

In this “Ilie Nastase” group, the second ticket for the semi-finals will be played between Fritz and Medvedev, since De Minaur lost all hope by conceding the second set 6-4 against Fritz.
