Age of first and last sexual intercourse, questioning of the heterosexual norm, difference in the number of partners between men and women, diversification of practices… A major scientific survey carried out by Inserm and the ANRS among more than 30,000 French people take stock of their sexuality in 2023.

The French make love less, but they do it better. This is one of the lessons of a major national study on French sexuality, conducted by the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) and the National Agency for Research on AIDS and Hepatitis. (ANRS) whose results were made public this Wednesday, November 13. Called “Context of sexualities in ” (1), it was carried out with more than 30,000 people aged 15 to 89, and questions the practices of French people in bed (or elsewhere) as well as their perception of their sexuality and of those of others. It is a vast and important survey, the results of which can be compared to previous editions of 1970, 1992 and 2006.

We therefore learn today, among other things, that the French have their first sexual relations later than their elders, but that they also make love later in their lives, that more people, particularly women, assume masturbate, and that the heterosexual norm is increasingly called into question. Another element, which may seem paradoxical: the French make love less often but their practices are diversifying, their partners are multiplying – notably thanks to meetings via the Internet – and their satisfaction is increasing.
