In the Nations League, the Red Devils will have a new difficult task to accomplish on Thursday evening. Indeed, Italy, leader of the group, will travel to the King Baudouin Stadium. But the 2021 European champions are also wary of the Belgians.
The Italian national team has had a tumultuous few years. For example, La Squadra failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, after which Roberto Mancini was appointed national coach.
The latter then led his country to a rather unexpected European title. But a new blow followed, since the Italians also missed their ticket to the 2022 World Cup. At the end of August 2023, the partnership with Mancini therefore ended. Luciano Spalletti, who had made Napoli a national champion a few months earlier, was appointed to succeed him.
On the path to victory
Under the leadership of the new national coach, Italy finally obtained its ticket to the European Championship. But here again, the Italians failed to convince, the second round being the last stage. On the other hand, in the Nations League, things are much better.
With 10 points out of 12, the Italians are currently at the top of the group. A point against the Belgians would even be enough to qualify for the quarter-finals.
“We want to continue our momentum. The confidence is there and the players know how to handle pressure,” Spalletti told Het Nieuwsblad on Wednesday evening during his press conference.
Watch out for Lukaku
The Red Devils are currently without several injured players. But compared to the first leg a few weeks ago (2-2), they have a considerable weapon. Indeed, Romelu Lukaku is back in the group.
And the Italians obviously know Napoli’s current spearhead very well. Spalletti is therefore wary, but does not want to adapt to Lukaku’s role.
“He’s an excellent player. We know very well that Belgium will want to exploit his talent. He is very strong on crosses and in duels. It will therefore be necessary to anticipate well. But his presence does not change my approach.”
