Juan Soto can change the complexion of an MLB franchise this winter. Will the Boston Red Sox be that team?
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Tuesday that Boston is one of four teams scheduled to meet with Soto in addition to the New York Yankees, the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays. Now, that doesn’t mean anything yet, especially knowing the New York clubs are ready for a high-profile bidding war to bring Soto to their boroughs of the Big Apple.
What it does mean is the Red Sox are not simply sending messages without corresponding action this offseason. The MLB GM Meetings shared plenty of that propaganda for Boston. The team needs to take necessary action and finalize legitimate additions to the roster to back that up.
Soto signing with Boston would energize the Red Sox lineup to an entirely new level. Rafael Devers would have another power bat to form a lethal 1-2 punch with an already capable supporting cast with Jarren Duran and Triston Casas. Yes, it’s a very left-handed group, but it would be among the most talented in the entire sport and offer the Red Sox a whole new world of possibilities, both for corresponding offseason moves as well as for postseason contention in 2025 and beyond.
Establishing Soto in the Boston outfield would spark a centerpiece for the franchise and in turn create incredible opportunities ahead. The Red Sox have legitimate outfield depth in Boston and in the minor leagues. That could open the door to providing the best trade scenarios to acquire impact pitchers, particularly for the starting rotation, with Soto as the new mainstay of the lineup.

The possibility of a Soto-Red Sox union holds several trickle-down effects. For now, that’s all it is. A possibility. And a distant one for the time being.
