The skipper of Paprek Arkéa suffered several tremors aboard his monohull, reflecting the rough sea conditions off the coast of Portugal.

After a gentle start and winds of four small knots on Sunday morning in Les Sables d'Olonne, the Vendée Globe competitors got to the heart of the matter with the passage of Cape Finisterre (Spain) in very rough seas. Conditions which tested the organisms of the sailors who did not have much opportunity to sleep last night.

Fourth in the ranking after opting for a route further west, Yoann Richomme sent a first recorded video this Tuesday late morning to give some news from the side. But the skipper of Paprec Arkéa, who is among the big favorites along with Charlie Dalin, Thomas Ruyant, Jérémie Beyou and a few others, was interrupted by several violent impacts from the boat and significant splashes of water on the deck behind him . Not really reassuring. “I wasn't super proud of my first night with bad choices, so I found myself behind the lead group. So, when passing Cape Finisterre, I really struggled. I hope I didn't take too many risks with the boat.”he explains.

I hope it will calm down a little

“There were still thirty knots and forty-five knots last night. I hope it will calm down a little as the day goes on. I'm trying to have a slightly smoother rhythm but it's not easy because the boat accelerates quite a bit in the waves and it ends up crashing like we just did.added the sailor, not very reassured, as the hull of his Imoca hit hard in the waves. The navigator has only just begun his trip around the world and he must know how to take care of his mount for a journey which should last at least 70 days. But the double winner of the Solitaire du Figaro (2016 and 2019) nevertheless remained confident with the lull expected at the end of the day or Wednesday.
