CINCINNATI (WXIX) – An FC Cincinnati midfielder has died at the age of 22.
Marco Angulo died at a hospital five weeks after he was seriously hurt in an Oct. 7 crash in the Ecuadorean capital of Quito, according to “The New York Times.”
Angulo was out on loan when the crash occurred.
He is survived by his wife and young son.
FC Cincinnati said in a statement Tuesday they “are heartbroken to share that Marco Angulo passed away Monday night after a battle with injuries sustained in an accident last month.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Marco—a husband and father, a brother and son, a friend and teammate. He was a joyful, kind young man who lit up every room he entered. Our entire club grieves this tragedy, and we are thinking of and praying for his family. He was a cherished member of the FC Cincinnati family, and he will be missed.”
FC Cincinnati said last month the crash was about 197 miles from his hometown of Esmeraldas.
Angulo played 24 games for FC Cincinnati last season in 2023.
He claimed two goal assists with eight shots on goal as a defensive midfielder.
In March, the franchise loaned Angulo to Liga Deportiva Universitaria Quito, of the Ecuadorian Liga Pro, until Dec. 31, 2024.
According to a translated X post by Ecuador Communication Radio, several other players from Liga De Quito were involved in the crash.
