Walkers with children, joggers, cyclists… This Monday, at the end of the morning, the towpath bordering the Canal de la Marque, near the Rue Nationale bridge, regained its usual appearance and tranquility. The place, which is also cycle route number 5 known as the “Roubaix canal”, is very popular and popular. And most of the users we meet this Monday morning, a public holiday, are still unaware of the tragedy that happened the day before.
Sunday, shortly after 6 p.m., Daniel, a 58-year-old from Marcquois, who was walking a friend's dog, was attacked at this location, a few meters from the Burger King parking lots and the Centrakor store. He suffered at least one fatal stab wound to the chest. A suspect was arrested shortly after. The man, homeless, allegedly stole the weapon from the nearby supermarket (open on Sundays) before hitting Daniel. The reasons for this act are still unknown.

The towpath is very popular with walkers, joggers, etc.
“We often come to walk here, it’s always very quiet” A tragedy that was unthinkable for many regulars, like this retiree living in the neighborhood: “ The towpath here is fine. It's more“murky ” on the Wasquehal side when you arrive under the bridges which are not lit “, he said. The man nevertheless worries about “ joggers, who come to run alone in the evening when there is no more light
».
The fact that the suspect is a homeless man arouses even more incomprehension. Because users regularly come across homeless people under the Rue Nationale bridge. But they all talk about a cohabitation that goes very well with the walkers. Like this photographer, who comes to immortalize the birds and wildlife living on the Brand: “ I've been coming here for years, he explains, there are never any worries. They (homeless people) are very nice. They even show me spots (where to take photos).” Same thing for this other resident: “ We often come to walk here, it's always very quiet
The events occurred on Sunday evening, shortly after 6 p.m.
