On the occasion of the Armistice, the SLFP-Defense union warns of the need to preserve military resources in the face of growing threats.

The SLFP-Defense union took advantage of the Armistice commemorations to launch an appeal to future political leaders: it is crucial not to weaken Defense in the current geopolitical climate. “Our soldiers do not deserve a betrayal disguised as tribute”declares Chris Huybrechts, president of the union, on this symbolic day.
“An unprecedented threat” to Defense
As Belgium pays tribute to fallen soldiers, SLFP-Defense warns of “unprecedented threats” weighing on the future of National Defense. The union accuses the future political coalition of risking national and international security by considering “rash measures” which would weaken the armed forces instead of supporting their reconstruction in the face of current tensions. This orientation is judged “irresponsible” and disrespectful to those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
Protecting the status of Defense personnel
Chris Huybrechts warns against calling into question the status of the military, believing that such a measure could inflict “irreversible damage” to the institution. According to him, it is urgent to strengthen and improve Defense “before it’s too late”. The union thus addresses a solemn appeal to decision-makers to “strengthen rather than weaken the operational capabilities of our defense and its personnel”.
Respect those who still serve
For the SLFP-Defense, “honoring fallen soldiers also means respecting those who continue to serve”. Through this appeal, the union wants leaders to become aware of the importance of protecting the resources allocated to Defense.
The SLFP-Defense calls on future decision-makers to take concrete measures to ensure the security and stability of the Belgian Defense, by strengthening resources and respecting the personnel who serve the country.
