France celebrates the Armistice and the end of the First World War this Monday, November 11. Like every year, a ceremony honoring the soldiers who died for France will be held in Paris.
This November 11 is not just an opportunity to enjoy a three-day weekend. Commemorations will take place during the day to pay tribute to the soldiers who died for France and to celebrate the 106th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918, which led to the end of the First World War. This year, the ceremony in Paris will also be an opportunity to celebrate Franco-British friendship. Emmanuel Macron will be accompanied by Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister.
On November 11, 1918, the Allies and the Germans signed the Armistice, ending the fighting of World War I. This Armistice, initially planned for a duration of 36 days, was renewed, thus leading to the victory of the Allies. It was signed in “the Armistice wagon”, in the Compiègne forest.
The ceremony
Emmanuel Macron will start his day with an interview with the British Prime Minister at the Élysée. The two heads of state will then take the road to the statue of Georges Clemenceau (president of the Council of Ministers in 1918) on the Champs-Élysées, then that of Winston Churchill. Wreaths will be laid before the two men go to Place de l'Etoile for the ceremony under the Arc de Triomphe. They will be accompanied by the British brass band The Band and the Bugles of the Rifles, who will play “God Save the King”, followed by the French army choir who will play the Marseillaise. Emmanuel Macron will lay a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then rekindle the Flame and greet veterans and families of soldiers who died for France, as tradition dictates.
Parisians will be impacted by the ceremony. A security perimeter will include several roads in the VIIth, VIIIth, XVIth and XVIIth arrondissements. Concerning public transport, the stations Boissière (line 6), Champs-Élysées-Clemenceau (Lines 1 and 13), Charles de Gaulle-Étoile (RER A, lines 1, 2 and 6), Franklin D. Roosevelt (lines 1 and 9), Georges V (line 1) and Kléber (line 6) will be closed on Monday.
