Union SG won 3-0 against an unrecognizable KRC Genk on Sunday evening. The people from Brussels played a lot better and were more efficient. Genk lost for the third time this season, and perhaps played its worst match of the season.
Union SG took on KRC Genk in the Dudenpark on Sunday evening. Lapoussin was back in the starting lineup for the home team. Genk coach Thorsten Fink was not surprised and did not make any substitutions.
The home team immediately started the game strongly and were able to surprise Genk enormously. Bangoura went badly wrong after five minutes. He suddenly started dribbling in front of his own penalty area, completely unnecessary. He quickly lost the ball.
Lapoussin picked up the ball and blasted it past goalkeeper Van Crombrugge, who also dived for the ball remarkably late. After the goal, things did not improve at Genk. Fink’s troops seemed rattled and were constantly losing the ball.
Towards the end of the second half there seemed to be an improvement in the game for Genk, but then Promise David suddenly doubled the lead on Lapoussin’s advice. Union gave Genk a lesson in efficiency, something that was not thought before the match.
Immediately after the break Sadiki was able to make it 3-0, although there was a smell to it. Heynen was caught in the penalty area, while he could have cleared the ball otherwise, preventing a goal. However, VAR did not intervene, strange choice, but not that it would have made much difference.
The scoring problem never seemed to exist at Union on Sunday. While Racing Genk was never actually involved. After Smets was thrown into the wind for the umpteenth time, Promise David made it 4-0. It turned out to be a very painful evening for the Limburgers.
Genk remains the sole leader with 31 points, but Club Brugge can now come within four points of the lead with a win against Beerschot. Union is now 7th and can smell the top six with 19 points.
