- FC Sion celebrates a 4-2 home win against FC Luzern on matchday 14 of the Super League.
- It is the Valais team’s first win in the Super League after nine unsuccessful games.
- FCL coach Mario Frick caused a stir with 5 changes (including goalie) at the break. However, these only bear fruit for a short time.
After 9 Super League games without success – the last one was on August 10th against Winterthur – promoted Sion has returned to winning ways in the domestic tourbillon. In a crazy game with many stories, the Valaisians ultimately prevailed 4-2 against Lucerne. For Lucerne it is another setback after the interim high against GC (2-0).
Sion’s offensive player Ilyas Chouaref provided one of the stories. The 23-year-old Frenchman hadn’t scored in the last 7 games and now scored a brace to give Sion the long-awaited celebration. Chouaref scored his second goal in the 89th minute after a beautiful individual effort. With this 4:2, Lucerne’s last hopes of winning a point were extinguished.
Frick swaps 5 times
It was thanks to coach Mario Frick and striker Thibault Klidjé that the guests from central Switzerland were at least able to believe in winning a point – two more special stories from this game.
Frick was so dissatisfied with his team’s performance after the first half that he quickly made 5 player changes at halftime. The allegedly injured Pascal Loretz was also replaced in the goalie position by Vaso Vasic.
This unusual measure seemed to bear fruit immediately after the restart: Klidjé scored with a remarkable header in the 49th minute to make it 1-2 – his first goal in the Super League since September 21st. But that wasn’t enough, because 10 minutes later it was suddenly 2:2. The Togolese striker scored again.
Chouaref outstanding – Frick pissed off
But Lucerne’s joy only lasted very briefly. 3 minutes after the frenetically celebrated equalizer, Sion was once again a length ahead. The outstanding Chouaref broke through on the right and played to the middle in the penalty area, where FCL defender Jesper Löfgren directed the ball into his own goal. An unfortunate scene that ultimately led to the preliminary decision.
But the fact that the action came from Chouaref was by no means a coincidence. The winger, who was called back into the starting line-up by coach Didier Tholot, made a significant contribution to the 2-0 half-time score with a goal (18th) and an assist – Dejan Sorgic converted his cross after just 102 seconds. And also because FCL coach Frick had more than enough after 45 minutes. He said after the game: “I was ashamed to be the coach of this team. It was an embarrassing performance.”
This is how it continues
After the almost two-week international break, FC Luzern will face YB at home on Saturday, November 23rd. On the same day, Sion will be a guest at FC Lausanne-Sport (live from 8:10 p.m. on SRF two).
