Following the damage that occurred at the University of Lyon 3 on the sidelines of the visit of Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the National Assembly, the Renaissance party (Rhône) is protesting against the response of the mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet.
In a press release, Renaissance describes Grégory Doucet's position as “problematic and scandalous”. The mayor reacted belatedly with a tweet, declaring: “The University of Lyon-III was targeted by tags during the visit of Yaël Braun-Pivet. No degradation is acceptable in the democratic debate. I thank the teams from the City of Lyon and the Metropolis for their responsiveness and the restoration of the buildings.”
The party points out an important omission in this reaction: “Grégory Doucet limited himself to mentioning tags and congratulating the services of the City and the Metropolis for the rehabilitation of the buildingswithout mentioning or condemning the violence, the anti-Semitic acts observed, nor the invasion of the premises. According to Renaissance, this silence on the violence and the explicit non-mention of anti-Semitism are “a refusal to name things and defend democracy”.
The party concludes that “by refusing to condemn violence, to name things, and to defend democracy […] Gregory Doucet is not up to the mandate of elected representative of the Republic that the Lyonnais have entrusted to him.”
