The All Saints' Day long weekend was an opportunity for Netflix to offer new content. Halloween obliges, fans of horror films got their thrills with “Time Cut” and “Don't Move” while families were able to come together to watch pure comedies such as “Loups-Garous” or “Les Déguns 2”. At the same time, a German series created an enormous effect of curiosity in France, as in fifteen other countries. “The Zen Murders” benefited from good word of mouth to rise to the top of the catalog of the most viewed fiction in France, four days after its release on October 31. A place that it still occupies on this Thursday, November 7, ahead of the second season of “The Diplomat” and “Beauty in Black”.
What is this unexpected success due to?
This thriller plays the offbeat card, and was able to remind some of the springs of the popular “Dexter”. It follows the story of a lawyer, named Björn, and played by Tom Schilling. The forty-year-old, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, begins a mindful meditation program to regain control of his life. A seminar that will lead him to become the most relaxed criminal in the world. The original pitch as well as the contrast between relaxation practices and bloody acts convinced French subscribers to the platform to try this experience. Especially since with only eight episodes of around thirty minutes, the series can be “binge-watched” in just a few days.

Success also sticks to the skin of this willingly selfish character, since “The Zen Murders” is an adaptation of the works of author Karsten Dusse. A literary saga whose volumes have sold more than two million copies worldwide. The dark humor has been well transcribed on the small screen, making this format fast and effective entertainment to build tension as the situations progress.
