Why Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner won't join Donald Trump's White House

Almost absent from the radar, Ivanka Trump was alongside her father on Wednesday in Palm Beach, during his historic victory in the presidential election. But far from it, she intends to occupy a new role in her government.

She was a centerpiece of Donald Trump's campaigns in 2016 and 2020. Ivanka Trump was, this year, conspicuous by her absence and her silence. But she was there, in Palm Beach this Wednesday, November 6, to celebrate the historic victory of her father, who became the 47th President of the United States. In a blue velvet suit, the eldest of the Trump children attracted all eyes. And now we wonder: will Ivanka be part of the next Trump administration?

It must be said that the 43-year-old American has long been one of Donald Trump's most fervent supporters. Very involved in the 2016 presidential campaign, she entered the White House through the front door in 2017. The father she loves so much calls her “high advisor”. Her husband, the wealthy businessman Jared Kushner, inherits the same title. The “Jivanka” will remain in their post until 2021. And the influence they have had on Donald Trump is no longer in doubt.

“Friends who have turned their backs”

Of Ivanka Trump, it has long been said that she was in reality the “First Lady”, not Melania Trump. Except here it is. Since 2021, Ivanka Trump and her husband have disappeared from the political radar. And if we are to believe the American press, despite Trump's re-election, neither would intend to return to the political arena. After a few tumultuous years in Washington, the couple now resides with their three children on the island of Indian Creek, nicknamed the “billionaires' bunker”, where their neighbors include Tom Brady, but also the founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez.

According to a source from Page Six “Ivanka is proud of her father, she loves him, but his last presidency took its toll.” “There are friends who turned their backs on Ivanka and Jared because of Donald, and it was hurtful. Now that she has a good life, she thinks she doesn't need to work in the White House to make a difference.” Another intimate confided to the American tabloid to expect “that we will be able to see Ivanka working with tech leaders and speaking about the safety of children on the Internet, as well as her concerns about child trafficking”. As a reminder, when she was at the White House, she was particularly involved in the subjects of education and the economic empowerment of women and families.

Priority to family

Another source close to the Kushner family adds: “Ivanka has been remarkably consistent for two years and right now she is focused on her family and the needs of her children. She has no intention of going into politics. If she has something to say, she will speak directly to her father, in private… If that changes and she decides to defend various policies, she will say it publicly.

Ivanka Trump had already warned him. In November 2022, when her father declared that he was a candidate for the 2024 presidential election, the latter immediately announced “to give priority this time to [ses trois] young children and the privacy we create as a family. “I have no intention of getting involved in politics (…) Although I will always love and support my father, in the future, I will do so outside of the political sphere,” she continued in his press release.

For his part, Jared Kushner could advise the transition team if necessary, particularly on geopolitical issues. And for good reason: during his father-in-law's first mandate, he worked on peace efforts in the Middle East, and developed a special relationship with the controversial Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. But since leaving the White House, the man who has all the makings of the ideal son-in-law has focused exclusively on his business. He is today at the head of Affinity Companies, a three billion dollar investment fund supported in particular… by Saudi Arabia. Not to mention his participation in the family real estate development company Kushner Companies. At the same time, he and his wife are leading two luxury real estate projects in Albania, one of which was designed by Ivanka Trump herself.

Better prepare for what comes next?

For Romuald Sciora, the director of the United States Political and Geostrategic Observatory of the Institute of International and Strategic Relations (Iris) interviewed in Le Figaro the absence of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner near Donald Trump could also be explained for professional reasons. “The couple has their own affairs and definitely does not want to be associated with Donald Trump.” According to him, this distance could also have political reasons, and underline their own future ambitions within the Republican Party.
