Bayern Munich announced the death of a supporter who attended the match against Benfica Lisbon (1-0) on Wednesday in the Champions League. The spectator was resuscitated several times in the stands before being transported to the hospital. According to the club's press release, he died before arriving there.
The chants stopped after the 3rd minute
“In the Champions League match against Benfica Lisbon, FC Bayern's 1-0 victory was relegated to the background due to a sad event,” the Bavarian club said in a press release. “A medical emergency in the stands of the Allianz Arena overshadowed the match from the start. Out of consideration, Südkurve refrained from the usual noisy support for their team and the club also reduced their coverage of this match. Around a hour after the final whistle, the club received the sad news that the supporter had died on the way to hospital. FC Bayern is mourning alongside his loved ones.
From the 3rd minute, the ultras of the Munich Südkurve at the Allianz Arena stopped their encouragement while the rescuers intervened in the southeast sector of the stadium. At the half-hour mark, while the rescuers left the area, the ultras made an announcement on the megaphone, and removed the flags from their emblematic stand.
“Due to an emergency medical intervention, there are currently no cheering chants from Bayern fans,” Bayern tweeted during the first half. The silence continued after the locker room, only the Benfica supporters were audible in the stadium of 75,000 spectators. “We didn't know it was because of a medical emergency. It's absolutely understandable that there was no encouragement. We didn't celebrate this victory in the locker room,” commented in the mixed zone Bayern captain Manuel Neuer. “It's not easy to talk about football. We didn't celebrate as we normally do for a success,” added Munich coach Vincent Kompany at a press conference.
