Barely elected for a second term, Donald Trump does not benefit from any state of favor with public opinion on this side of the Atlantic. According to an Elabe survey for BFMTV published this Thursday, November 7, 79% of French people say they have a bad image of the elected American president.
High unpopularity, but down slightly compared to the first election of Donald Trump in 2016. 83% of respondents then said they had a bad image of the Republican candidate after his victory against Hillary Clinton.
In detail, 51% of French people say they have a “very bad image” and 28% a “fairly bad image” of the 47th President of the United States. Donald Trump therefore only enjoys a good image with 21% of those questioned, including 12% who even have a “very good image” of him.
More than 60% of French people say they are “worried”
This feeling transcends social categories and electorates. However, as the Elabe Institute points out, the image of Donald Trump “is particularly bad among NFP voters (94%) and Ensemble (91%, compared to 56% among RN voters), among women (86%, compared to 70% among men) and among managers (88%, compared to 67% among workers).
The election of Donald Trump also arouses “concern” among a majority of French people surveyed (62%), while 26% say they feel “indifference” and 12% “satisfaction”.
Women (63%), those over 65 (75%) and middle managers and professions are those showing the most concern. On the other hand, it is among National Rally voters that we find the largest proportion of people “satisfied” to see the Republican candidate return to the White House (31%).
“Bad news” for the climate according to the French
Among the subjects that could suffer the most from Donald Trump's accession to power in the eyes of the French, the climate is at the top. Perhaps remembering the United States' withdrawal from the Paris agreement in June 2017, 72% of them see the result of the American presidential election as a bad thing for the fight against climate change. 68% of those questioned believe that this is not good news for relations between America and Europe either.

Elabe survey for BFMTV carried out with a sample of 1,006 people representative of residents of mainland France aged 18 and over.
