Before the important Champions League game against Benfica Lisbon, João Palhinha spoke at the press conference about FC Bayern’s current situation and the importance of the game against the club from his home country.
Munich – After recent defeats against Aston Villa and Barcelona in the Champions League, the game against Benfica is of great importance for FC Bayern. “We’re approaching it like a final,” Palhinha clarified.
With the home advantage behind them, FC Bayern hopes to get back on the road to success in the premier class against Benfica: “We know that Benfica is in good form, but we are trying to win.” The team from Portugal is traveling with three wins in a row to Munich and will appear confident.
Defensive strength is the key to success
A decisive factor for FC Bayern could be their recently improved defensive performance. Palhinha emphasized that the team had not conceded a goal in the last three games: “We want to keep that and continue like that against Benfica.” The midfielder sees the zero in his own half as the basis for success: “That is always the first Step if you want to win games.”
Focus on your own strengths and Kompany football
Under former coach Roger Schmidt, Benfica have taken many players to a new level, but Palhinha believes Bayern’s high pressing and Vincent Kompany’s tactical approach are the way forward: “For me it’s an advantage when we press like that . I think a team like Bayern should press like that.” Bayern have proven that they can dominate games with this style of play and maintain control of the game.
The pressure and responsibility at FC Bayern
“When you play for such a big club, the pressure comes automatically,” answered Palhinha when asked how great the current pressure was for him and continued: “We fight in every game, want to win every game – that’s why FC Bayern is such a big club. I’m in the right place and I’m proud to be here. We will fight to win as many titles as possible.”

As a former Sporting player, it will be a special game for the midfielder against the then rivals from the Portuguese capital. At least he won his last duel in a Sporting uniform against Benfica. Bayern also want to continue their strong series: the record champions have remained unbeaten in the twelve duels against the team from Lisbon so far.
