This is what it looks like in the race for the US Congress

Trump’s Republicans take power in the new Congress senate. This is what the US media reports after their candidates’ victories in the states of West Virginia and Ohio. Further victories cannot be ruled out.

The Senate seats are awarded for six years. A total of 100 senators sit in this chamber of Congress. There the Democratic Party had an extremely narrow majority with 51 seats.

The situation in House of Representatives however, is still unclear. With their victory in the Senate, Trump’s Republicans could block Democratic legislation. The Chamber of Congress is also responsible for confirming many ministers, federal judges and high-ranking officials nominated by the president.

During the vote, 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be re-allocated. The members of the House of Representatives are elected for two years. Before the election, the Republicans had the majority in this chamber of Congress, which is 218 seats.
