2024 US electionsdossier

The Republican candidate is guaranteed to be re-elected this November 6 for a second term against Democrat Kamala Harris. For the United States, as for the rest of the world, this is not good news.

Being afraid does not prevent danger. We were afraid of the scenario that the American presidential election gave rise to: the victory of Donald Trump, who, at 78 years old, will enter the Oval Office for the second time and lead the greatest power in the world. The suspense of an election announced for months as extremely close fueled the hope of averting the threat. She is now here. Perhaps reinforced by disappointment, but above all nourished by the experience of a first mandate and the intuition that the second will be the same, only worse.

Worse for women, as Donald Trump promised “to protect, whether they like it or not”. Worse for black or Latino minorities. Worse for the immigrants he said he wanted to expel en masse. Obviously worse for the planet, the future president of the United States doesn't care about the climate threat like his first shirt. Worse for the world economy, which is threatened by the protectionism and nationalism of the future tenant of the White House. Worse for the balance of the world. Worse for Ukrainians. Worse for the Middle East. Worse for Europe, which is feared too fragile to resist the bad winds that are going to blow. Worse for the idea that we believed to be quite simple of the truth of the facts. So worse for information. Worse for culture too, and education, these enemies of Trumpian vulgarity. Worse for science, which is anything but synonymous with progress for the winner of November 5. Worse, in a word, for democracy. American democracy of course. But democracy elsewhere too, the victory of Donald Trump can only weaken, in many latitudes, and first of all ours, the spirit of resistance to this reactionary revolution. It has been growing wings in many so-called liberal democracies for years. The election of Donald Trump may raise fears that it is no longer on the move, but is coming with a vengeance.
