Pompeo, Waltz or Musk… who will be Donald Trump's bodyguard?

Donald Trump, who will soon be re-elected President of the United States, has not officially revealed who will make up his cabinet but names are circulating.

“He would be excellent in this area”, these are the words in which Donald Trump, during his campaign events, underlined his admiration for one or other potential candidates for his cabinet.

In addition to his colleague JD Vance who will become Vice President, the identity of the people who will occupy the various positions in the Trump administration has not been officially confirmed, here are the candidates who could constitute Trump 2.0's cabinet and compose his “guard close”.

Mike Pompeo

Last month, Donald Trump said he was considering four or five candidates for defense secretary. One of them is none other than former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who headed the CIA before serving as the Trump administration's top foreign affairs adviser.

Richard Grenel

Another potential candidate for Secretary of State, Richard Grennel is very popular with Donald Trump. He served as US ambassador to Germany before serving as acting director of national intelligence.

Robert Kennedy Junior

The third candidate in this presidential election collected half a million votes despite the withdrawal of his candidacy. He said he was in contact with Trump and could have an influential role in the new government, even if it is not official. At his rally at Madison Square Garden, Mr Trump said Mr Kennedy could “go wild” on food and drugs if he were to win.

Mike Waltz

Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense? Mike Waltz is tipped for one of the two positions. The U.S. Army veteran said he was open to the position. He served as national security advisor under President George Bush.

Robert Lighthizer

Formerly responsible for trade during Trump's first term, he has remained very close to Trump and is being considered for an economic position such as commerce or secretary of state of the Treasury. He has previously encouraged the United States to take a nationalist approach to trade and has been a strong supporter of Trump's tariff proposals.

Elon Musk

The billionaire played a leading role in Trump's campaign, going so far as to promise millions to those who voted for the Republican. While Trump ruled out the possibility of him being a member of his cabinet, he nevertheless said he wanted Mr. Musk to have an unspecified role in his new government.
