The French multinational distribution company Carrefour announced on Monday the closure of all its stores in Jordan, a decision attributed to the boycott of brands supporting Israel, which has been carrying out deadly attacks against the Gaza Strip for more than a year.
“As of November 4, 2024, Carrefour will cease all its operations in Jordan and will end its activities in the kingdom,” Carrefour wrote in a statement published on Facebook.
The company expressed its gratitude to its customers, adding: “We thank our customers for their support and apologize for any inconvenience this decision may cause. »
Since October 7, 2023, major international brands have faced boycotts in many Arab, Islamic and other countries, with public opinion turning against companies perceived to provide direct or indirect support to Israel in the conflict. Gaza.
Jordan is not the only country where consumer boycotts have affected international brands. Similar actions have targeted major brands, basic necessities and even certain types of medicines in other Arab and Islamic countries, which are beginning to report difficulties in maintaining their activities due to these widespread boycotts.
In defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire, Israel has continued its deadly offensive against the Gaza Strip since October 7 of last year.
More than 43,000 people have been killed since then, mainly women and children, while some 102,000 others have been injured, according to local health authorities.
Israel is also being prosecuted for the “crime of genocide” before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), due to its actions in the Gaza Strip.
