The results of the American presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will be known overnight.
UNITED STATES – Two questions plague the world on this day of the American presidential election. The main one: who, Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, will succeed Joe Biden in the White House? The other, more incidental: when will we know the name of the 47th president of the United States?
Until 2020, the result was known late in the evening on the East Coast, or early in the morning in France. But four years ago, the setbacks in counting the postal vote and the small gap between the two candidates dragged out the suspense for several days.
In all cases, a constant appears: the « swing states »or pivotal states, make the winner. Because even more than in France where we look at the scores of an election city by city or department by department, the American presidential election is truly played out state by state. American citizens vote for electors who will then appoint the president on December 17. And in almost all states, the rule of « winner takes all » applies, giving all the major voters to the camp that came first.
Harris or Trump, who will be first at 270?
Throughout the night, the map of the United States will turn blue or red depending on whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump wins a particular state. And the gauge of the number of electors will fill up with an objective for each candidate: reaching the fateful threshold of 270, which will allow the Democrat or the Republican to install themselves in the Oval Office.
This map of the results of the American presidential election is updated live on the website of the Monde.
Among the states, a large number are predetermined for the Democratic camp or the Republican camp depending on the sociology and history of each. We thus know that the 40 electoral votes in Texas and the 30 in Florida go to Donald Trump while the 54 in California and the 28 in New York go to Kamala Harris.
Only a handful of states, the famous seven « swing states », pose a real challenge. The outcome of the election depends on the results in Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Arizona and particularly Pennsylvania (where 19 electors will be elected).
