First Alert Forecast | Trending warmer, much wetter by mid-week

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Cool and gloomy weather remains locked in-place across north Georgia. We’ll warm-up as a risk of widespread rain arrives. Wednesday is a First Alert Weather Day.

A gloomy sky continues across north Georgia this afternoon. Temperatures are struggling to warm into the low and mid-60s across the immediate metro. Temperatures remain in the 50s northeast of Atlanta, while closer to 70° southwest of the metro.

A few sprinkles and patchy drizzle are possible through early evening. The weather won’t be wet enough to impact any plans.

Election Day begins with temperatures in the 50s and lower 60s; close to where they have been today. We’ll warm into the mid and upper 70s in Atlanta by mid-afternoon. While not a completely sunny day, there will be more sunshine than the previous two days. A spotty shower, or two, cannot be ruled out.

Keep “precipitation” alerts turned on in the First Alert Weather App, just in case.

First Alert Weather Day | Widespread rain possible Wednesday

Tropical moisture will work in tandem with an approaching storm system to produce widespread wet weather across much of the state Wednesday. The first few rain showers are possible south of Atlanta Wednesday morning. Rain is expected to gradually expand northward and become heavier through the afternoon hours. Heavy rain is possible. The evening commute could be slow around the metro.

Forecast map for Wednesday evening(Atlanta News First)

Potential Tropical Cyclone 18 was upgraded to Tropical Depression 18 earlier today. It’s forecast to become Tropical Storm Rafael by tomorrow and a Hurricane Tuesday night or Wednesday as it approaches Cuba. From there, the system will track into the Gulf and start to weaken as it approaches the Gulf Coast. Tropical moisture streams into the southeast, even though the system itself remains well to our south.

Keep a close eye on T.D. 18’s forecast track if you have plans to visit the Gulf Coast or cruise plans out of any Gulf Coast or adjacent port. Weakening is likely as it approaches the coastline. But, inclement weather is certainly still possible.

The First Alert Weather Team will be fine-tuning our local forecast and expected wet weather impacts on Atlanta News First, streaming on ANF+ and with video updates in the First Alert Weather App.

Formed Monday morning in the Caribbean. This storm is forecast to become Hurricane Rafael as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico this week.(WANF)

Have a great evening,
