Pennsylvania, the real key to victory? This Monday, on the eve of the election, the two rival candidates plan to spend a lot of time in Pennsylvania. Donald Trump is holding two meetings there, in Reading and Pittsburgh, while his running mate JD Vance will complete a four-trip tour of the “Keystone state”; Kamala Harris spends the whole day there. The Democratic candidate is making her 18th trip there since she replaced Joe Biden in July: after Scranton this morning, Allentown and Reading, where she will go two hours after her opponent, Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff will hold a meeting in Pittsburgh, with singer Katy Perry. They will end their journey in Philadelphia, this time alongside Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga.

This is because Pennsylvania, an agricultural and industrial state whose electoral heart constantly swings between red and blue, is the last step that leads to the White House. Its 13 million inhabitants (at the last census dating from 2020), designate 19 delegates, the highest potential of the “swing states”. In 2020, Joe Biden won the state by only 80,000 votes, out of more than 6.8 million votes cast.

Seven states will hold the American presidential election, indirect ballot in one round. The infographic above explains why.
