Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, what would their first day in the White House look like?

D-1 before the presidential election in the United States. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are throwing their last forces into the battle, notably by each holding a meeting in Pennsylvania, one of the most popular states in the poll, on Monday November 4. If elected, what will the candidates do on the first day of their presidency?

It is difficult to outline the Democratic candidate's first steps, because each time the question is asked of her, she does not answer it clearly, as on CNN: “I would tell you first and foremost that one of my highest priorities is to do everything we can to support and strengthen the middle class.” This is the first line on what she calls her “to do list”, her list of things to do once elected: first lower prices for the middle class, where she comes from, like her repeats it in every speech. She wants to attack in particular companies that own housing which, she says, increase the rents of working families.

For this, Kamala Harris would obviously resort to decrees, like all new presidents. Joe Biden signed 17 on the first day of his mandate, including one to prevent the construction of the wall wanted by Donald Trump on the border with Mexico. As vice-president in office, Kamala Harris would above all, from the first day, be in a dynamic not seen since 1989 in the White House, when Bush Sr. succeeded Ronald Reagan and continued on the rails of the previous Republican administration.

For his part, Donald Trump has often mentioned his start to his second term in the White House if he were elected. The former president indicated that he would act as “a dictator on the first day”. He would then do two things: close the border, it would be impossible to enter the United States except legally, and drill, referring to hydraulic fracturing, this method of extracting natural gas contested by environmental defenders . For the rest, “no I will not be a dictator”he assures.

But Donald Trump has repeatedly declared that there will be punishment, punishment for those he calls “the enemies within” : judges, prosecutors, in particular special prosecutor Jack Smith who opened proceedings against him for illegal attempt to reverse the results of the 2020 election. The billionaire also wants to increase customs duties on products as quickly as possible imported, up to 100% for cars. China is particularly targeted. Donald Trump could still rehabilitate or pardon the perpetrators of the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He sees them as “patriots”.
