American presidential election: Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in the home stretch of an extraordinary campaign

Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris made a surprise visit to New York on Saturday, where the outgoing vice-president appeared on the entertainment show “Saturday Night Live”.

This was Kamala Harris' first appearance on the satirical show. The Republican candidate for the White House, Donald Trump, participated during his electoral campaign in 2015.

Earlier in the day, Kamala Harris traveled to North Carolina, one of the states considered decisive for the November 5 vote, for a rally during which she was joined by singer Bon Jovi.

Donald Trump was also in North Carolina, where he said he would deport millions of immigrants if elected, adding that if Kamala Harris won, “every town in America would be transformed into a squalid and dangerous refugee camp.”

Can Harris win Iowa?

In Atlanta, Kamala Harris said the former Republican president would abuse his power if he returned to the White House. “He is someone who is increasingly unstable, obsessed with revenge, consumed by resentment, and this man is seeking unfettered power“, she warned.

It's the last day for early voting in North Carolina, where about 4 million people have already cast their ballots as the western part of the state still recovers from deadly flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. .

The former Republican president criticized the federal government's response to the disaster and repeated a false claim that aid was diverted from the state to help immigrants enter the country. Donald Trump won in North Carolina in 2020 by a narrow margin.

However, a Democratic governor was elected the same day in the state, which fuels hope in both camps. More than 72 million people have already voted early nationally, according to data from the University of Florida.

Kamala Harris is credited with a lead over Donald Trump in Iowa, a state that the Republican candidate had easily won in the two previous presidential elections, according to a poll published Saturday.
