“As the President of the Republic has already recognized for Maurice Audin and Ali Boumendjel, this repression was accompanied by the establishment of a system outside the society of human and citizen rights, made possible by the vote for special powers in Parliament,” adds the Élysée.
Born in 1923 in the Aurès in the north-east of Algeria, Larbi Ben M'hidi was responsible for the “autonomous zone of Algiers” since 1956 during the Battle of Algiers. A man of conviction, the courage and brilliant mind of this FLN leader commanded respect, including that of his adversaries. Arrested on February 23, Larbi Ben M'hidi was exhibited in front of the press, his hands tied, while keeping his smile in front of the French paratroopers. “Reputable soldiers were impressed by his charisma and courage,” said the French presidency, which paid tribute to him.
