Manchester United ends its collaboration with Dutchman Erik ten Hag. The English top club will be looking for a new trainer, they announced on Monday. Ten Hag’s assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy takes over on an interim basis.

After nine matchdays, Manchester United is only fourteenth in the Premier League with eleven points. Last weekend they lost 2-1 to West Ham.

Ten Hag’s dismissal had been in the air for some time. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the CEO of chemical company Ineos who bought 25 percent of the shares in United at the end of last year, kept quiet at the beginning of this month when he was asked by the BBC whether he still had confidence in the coach. “I don’t want to answer that question,” Ratcliffe said. “I like Erik. I think he is a very good coach, but it is not up to me to make that decision.”

Ten Hag came to Manchester in 2022. Previously, he had done excellently at Ajax, with whom he played the semi-finals of the Champions League. In the 2022-2023 season, Man U finished third and won the Carabao Cup, while last season United finished a disappointing eighth. It then won the English Cup against arch-rival Manchester City.
