The loss too much: Erik ten Hag fired from Manchester United

Erik ten Hag is no longer the coach of Manchester United. The Dutch trainer had been working there since April 2022, but – despite winning 2 trophies – was unable to reach great heights with the club. Manchester United is currently in 14th place in the Premier League. Ruud van Nistelrooy takes over as interim coach.

After another painful defeat last weekend, Manchester United has made the decision. Erik ten Hag will no longer be on the sidelines at Old Trafford from today.

The Dutchman came over from Ajax in April 2022, where he spent 4 years on the bench. He guided the Dutch team to 3 national titles with attacking football. He also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019.

But in England things did not go so smoothly. In 2023, United finished third in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup, although the public discussion with star player Cristiano Ronaldo remained the main focus. Ten Hag also won a prize in 2024: the FA Cup.

But that trophy masked the fact that United were actually in crisis. It finished 8th, the worst final ranking since 1990. A dismissal was already threatened in the mid-season, but the bosses still gave the Dutchman the confidence and even extended his contract until 2026.

But United have remained in the same bed this season and are only 14th after the defeat to West Ham this weekend. It has only won 1 of its last 8 games.

United said goodbye to Ten Hag in a club statement. “We are grateful for everything Erik has done during his time with us and we wish him much success in the future.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy will now take over his duties as interim coach, but United will be looking for a new head coach.
