Five departments, Alpes-Maritimes, , Lozère, and Ardèche, have been placed on orange “rain-flood” vigilance, Météo- announced in its 6 a.m. bulletin, Wednesday October 16 , which envisages an alert at least until midnight. All, except Ardèche, are also on orange “thunderstorms” alert.

Lozère and Gard had already been placed at this level of vigilance on Tuesday afternoon, for rain-flooding and thunderstorms, due to an autumnal episode in the Cévennes described as “classic” by the forecaster. The latter, for example, recorded 97 millimeters of rain in Rousses, in Lozère.

In the Cévennes, widespread accumulations of “200 to 300 millimeters” are expected on the relief, with “points at 350 millimeters or more”over forty-eight hours, by the end of the day Thursday, warns the meteorological agency. These rains “will weaken temporarily in the evening but will reactivate on Thursday”adds the same source.

Concerning the two departments of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the meteorological agency mentions a “intense rain-storm episode requiring special monitoring due to its intensity and the sensitivity of the potentially impacted areas”. “In the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes, during the day, storms that are sometimes not very mobile can produce 80 to 120 millimeters in a few hours”concludes the public establishment.

According to its latest update, the Alpes-Maritimes and Var will no longer be affected by orange alerts on Thursday. On the other hand, they must remain in force in Lozère, Gard and Ardèche until around 9:30 p.m.
